Sumi-e Paintings by Patricia Larkin Green
Sumi-e informs my painting; I begin with the meditative process, stretching to inhabit my subject matter and leaving the mark on paper with my impression. It is a lovely way to create.
What is Sumi-e: The goal of ink and wash painting is not simply to reproduce the appearance of the subject, but to capture its soul. The ink wash painting artist has empathy and inhabits the subject material. When I paint a flower, I am unfurling my arms and dancing with the leaves. I seek to convey the lifeforce and fragrance. East Asian ink wash painting may be regarded as an earliest form of expressionistic art that captures the unseen and inspired Georgia O’Keeffe, Toulouse Lautrec and Aurthur Wesley Dow.
New Sumi-e paintings will be added -please check back soon for spring paintings.
I am currently working on a book that will have a series of my sumi-e paintings as illustrations. Watch this space for there is more to come!
