The Four Nobles: The Sumi-e Path Begins Here
Four Gentlemen and Beyond for Beginners, Intermediate & Advanced will begin with a focus on Plum Blossom, Grass Orchid, Bamboo and Chrysanthemum: Trunks, Stems, Branches, Leaves and composing a painting using Paper from The Beginner Roll or The Advanced Paper Roll. Many lessons will be taken from Sato Sensei’s Sumi-e: The Art of Japanese Ink Painting and I-Hsiung Ju’s Book of Bamboo:
All levels are welcome, plan to let go and have fun while learning a few new stroke techniques.

In Depth Technique, Vocabulary of Strokes, Composition and Theory. Easier to follow and develop a strong base in technique, Step by step paintings over the 4 weeks.
Each Lesson begins with a Zen lesson, Breath and Hand exercises followed by techniques with interactive demonstrations. The last section of the class time is devoted to a step by step painting instruction incorporating the techniques covered. Review of practice work with personal feedback between classes and during a pre-class session where participants are encouraged to log in early to interact.

The brush 聿 (fude), ink 墨 (boku), ink stone 硯 (suzuri),
and hand made paper 和紙 (washi) are the Traditional Tools for Sumi-e and Shodo.

Japanese ink painting, (sumi-e) is the art of painting using brush (fude), ink (sumi) and thin absorbent “rice-paper” (washi).
The emphasis is on the process! The Class will be introduced to the “Four Treasures” (The ink stick, the ink stone, brush and paper) and each class will begin with a demonstration then guided instruction on how to paint “The Four Gentlemen” (The lessons introduce the student to the four basic strokes groups). Advanced Students will be provided individualized guidance, work at their own pace discovering “idea” paintings and advanced techniques.

Learn techniques for ink painting animals while bringing life to your brushstrokes. Create in a playful environment. No experience necessary. If you’ve painted sumi-e before-you will learn some new techniques. Bring a photo of your pet and learn how to paint it while learning the sumi-e process!

As someone who has gone behind the scenes in studios with all sorts of artists, I can tell you it’s always a fascinating and rewarding experience. Connie Noyes will be opening her studio to celebrate the successful launch of the social media platform for her project IN THE PINK: the 1,000,000 people art project. Per Ms. Noyes, the IN THE PINK project draws attention and awareness to socio-cultural, historic, trans-national, economic, political, creative, generational, gender and spiritual issues based on cultural and/or personal connections to the color pink to create a global community of art and dialogue. Noyes envisions pink as a universal thread, stating, “Shades of pink are the color we share. It’s the internal color of muscles and organs unconcerned with external racial, class, gender or spiritual differences.” Noyes will be showing her own work as well as work from Chicago artists. The celebration takes place at Noyes Studio, 629 W Cermak, Studio 304 in Pilsen on Thursday, April 5, 2012 from 6 – 10 p.m.

Thank you for coming out to support the Chicago Center for Integration and Healing and my artwork. The other artist in the show is Julie Koenig, an ovarian cancer survivor. When CCIH Director, Amy Zajakowski Uhll spoke about her vision for the Center the packed room fell silent and drew close. Love and admiration communed throughout and applause rose each time she directed the spotlight on her supporting cast. These brave therapists commit their lives to guiding trauma victims, cancer survivors and damaged souls back to a healthy life. CCIH is doing tremendous work and I am honored to have been part of their Grand Opening. A special thank you to Carol McRaith.

Learn to simplify a specimen into a few well placed strokes with the minimalist approach of brush painting. We will view examples of this minimalist art form and then try your hand at a simple brush painting using photographs of flowers as inspiration.

We are excited to announce Shozo Sato’s Advanced Sumi-e Workshop at The Japanese Culture Center. This will be an extraordinarily rare opportunity to study with Sato Sensei and learn about Sumi-e and Shodo from the vision of a Tea Master and author.

Shozo Sato, is an internationally renowned Japanese master of traditional Zen arts, and has received the Order of Sacred Treasure from the Emperor of Japan for his contributions in teaching Japanese traditions. His areas of expertise include ikebana (flower arranging), chanoyu (tea ceremony), and Japanese theater as well as sumi-e (ink painting). He conducts workshops on ikebana and sumi-e throughout the U.S., Asia and Europe and is the author of numerous books including The Art of Arranging Flowers: A Complete Guide to Japanese Ikebana, Tea Ceremony, Shodo: The Quiet Art of Japanese Zen Calligraphy and The Art of Sumi-e. He was the founding director of Japan House at the University of Illinois, where he is Professor Emeritus and continues to teach Japanese arts. Shozo Sato resides in Champaign, IL.
Advanced Sumi-e Workshop: Exploring the Relationship between Shodo (Japanese Calligraphy Brush strokes) and Sumi-e.
Brush use for calligraphy and painting share a rich history of over 100 years with established methods and rules traditionally transmitted from teacher to student for 110 generations. Sato Sensei will demonstrate techniques developed to transfer the artist’s internalized “chi” or “ki” from brush-ink to sensitive paper. Controlling the amount of ink to create a wide variety of lines can be daunting. Sato Sensei is known for his clear explanations of the history, philosophy and energy that are essential to sumi-e.
Part 1: Shodo lesson: The relationship of brushwork pressure, movement, energy and active space.
Part 2. Advanced techniques for sumi-e painting of trees: Step by Step, using calligraphy strokes to create a dynamic tree.
Part 3. Final works: Participants are encouraged to bring examples of trees to paint for the final painting.
Pre-work: Participants are encouraged to bring their own practice sketches or paintings of trees for feedback.
All materials included, however participants are welcome to bring their own supplies to work with.

The women, working in a wide range of art mediums, represent diverse ethnic and ancestral backgrounds. Many express their political, social, religious and ethnic beliefs through their work. After all, America has welcomed immigrants promising them freedoms they were denied at home from the first meal at Plymouth Rock. Others were not welcomed under equal circumstances, to put it mildly, and others who were here first got the worst surprise as payment for their original kindness. The focal point that speaks to each artist shows up in their work in subtle and/or overt ways that you will see if you look. Their artist statements will provide more insight. Neighborhoods in Chicago (and other cities around the world) are generally homogeneous, despite desegregation. Ragdale Fellow Joyce Owens is a painter and sculptor with an MFA degree in painting from Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut and a BFA from Howard University in Washington, D.C. She was curator and associate professor of painting and drawing at Chicago State University. She has been the curator for numerous exhibitions including: The David and Reva Logan Center at the University of Chicago; The Fourth Presbyterian Church, Chicago; Elmhurst College, Elmhurst, IL; The Art Center in Highland Park, The Noyes Cultural Center, Evanston, IL; The Southside Community Art Center and others. New students will be introduced to the “Four Treasures” (The ink stick, the ink stone, brush and paper).Each class will begin with a demonstration then guided instruction on how to paint“The Four Gentlemen” (The lessons introduce the student to the four basic strokes groups). Advanced Students will work at their own pace discovering “idea” paintings.

Additionally, an ensō demonstration and sumi-e workshop by Patricia Larkin Green, sumi-e artist, who will demonstrate painting ensō and lead participants in meditation before practicing their own ensō at 12:30 PM on Saturday. The Artist will provide hands-on guidance and discuss a brief history of the ensō (a hand-drawn circle in one uninhibited brushstroke to express a moment when the mind is free to let the body create).

In this In-Sync post, I have the opportunity to share my interview with Chicago-based artist Patricia Larkin Green. I have known Patricia for a few years. I was thrilled to visit the exhibition of her ongoing series of unmade beds at the President’s Gallery of Chicago State University. These paintings that relate to our intimate spaces capture our sense of humanity and often resemble a surreal landscape of hills and valleys.

and what difference does it make?
Chuang Tzu, a contemporary of Mencius, is universally regarded as the greatest Taoist after Lao Tzu. His butterfly dream is probably the most celebrated dream ever to be recorded in the history of Chinese Philosophy, which makes it almost impossible to omit in any serious expositions of Chuang Tzu’s works. Whether or not the dream actually occurred is not a matter of great importance. What is important is that it has captured the minds of generations of Philosophers
Chuang Tzu, however, preferred something more compromising: “When I say you are dreaming, so am I.” In other words, we are all dreaming. This is best illustrated in his butterfly dream story. ‘The passage:
Once upon a time, Chuang Tzu dreamed that he was a butterfly, flying about enjoying itself. It did not know that it was Chuang Chou.

It is impossible to correct the line once on the paper. My hand betrays my inner state, requiring a balance of self-control and spontaneity. Every brush-touch must be fully-charged with meaning, with useless detail eliminated. My intent is to let each mark of my brush meet the paper as an extension of my state of mind. I am working inward as I paint outward. In Sumi-e painting, when you observer what you paint, you become it. You no longer see “the Japanese Crane” as separate from yourself. Sprouting feathers, you throw your head back as you dance with your brush and touch the paper with your breath….””

“Sumi-e (East Asian ink wash painting) … Meditation and planning are essential. It is impossible to correct the line once on paper. My hand betrays my inner state, requiring a balance of self-control and spontaneity. I distill my subject’s essence in my mind while grinding the ink. Every brush-touch must be full-charged with meaning, with useless detail eliminated. When I paint a flower I am freed from reproduction and inspired to convey its movement and fragrance.
