The Drawing Workshop is Saved
The Drawing Workshop-click to see story aired on Chicago Tonight 8.22.2013
Thanks to a group of artists* drawing together to preserve a Chicago Legacy-The Drawing Workshop was brought to the attention of Bruce Robbins, founder of Lillstreet and this valuable art institution was saved. After 40 years George Soto’s “The Drawing Workshop” will continue under Lillstreet after August. For more information email here: thedrawingworkshop@lillstreet.com
Founded by George Sotos over forty years ago at the landmarked Tree Studios building in Chicago, The Drawing Workshop is a large art studio (or atelier) at 4011 N. Ravenswood, Chicago, IL. It is near the Brown Line El stop at Montrose and the Metra station at Lawrence.
The Drawing Workshop is open to everyone. For a small studio/model fee, those who love drawing from life and learning a “visual vocabulary” may participate in weekly sessions. These sessions meet the needs of professional working artists and serious amateur artists who receive critiques and personalized instruction.

The Drawing Workshop has been around for 40 years, offering live models for professional and amateur artists to draw or paint. Classes like these are still offered at art colleges, but the Drawing Workshop has a drop-in approach for its clients, who range from courtroom artists to bankers to hobbyists. It’s a time-honored art tradition known as the “atelier” (French for “workshop”) that is fading in the digital age.
The Drawing Workshop in Ravenswood is now in jeopardy of closing due to the retirement of its founder, George Sotos. We have the story on Chicago Tonight at 7:00 pm.
“I have my left foot anchored in corporate america while my right stretches with my art spirit. The ritualistic exercise, meditation and workshop community of Life Drawing recharges and integrates me. Over the years, creative problem solving while drawing from life has developed in me the resourcefulness for solving new challenges in my day job. The professional set up of the studio at The Drawing Workshop provides a needed respite for me. Here in the heart of Chicago beats the classical tradition of The Drawing Workshop. I want to keep it alive.” Patricia Larkin Green
